I have a soft spot for artists who put a little bit of their life, struggles, and identity into their music, and YesaYa certainly gives us something to connect with. The London-based Malawian rapper, singer and producer has an interesting story, shaped by two worlds and the different sounds, cultures and experiences that come with them. Growing up surrounded by Malawi’s music, rhythms and folklore, before finding his feet in the UK, has given him a musical identity. He is an independent artist who writes and produces his records, and you can appreciate the personal touch that comes with having complete ownership of your creative vision. He isn’t only making music; he is sharing a piece of himself.
His recent release, “D.P.W.M. (Don’t Play With Me),” catches attention with its attitude and unmistakable message. This is a song about knowing your worth, refusing to be pushed around, and finding the courage to keep going when life throws one challenge after another your way. I like the spirit behind it. It is satisfying to hear an artist turn past setbacks into a declaration of strength rather than allowing them to become a reason to give up. YesaYa approaches the subject with confidence, but there is also a sense of determination beneath the tough exterior. It feels like a reminder to anyone who has ever been doubted that their story isn’t over yet.
One enjoyable thing about the track is the balance in YesaYa’s vocal approach. His rap delivery has a firm, confident character, giving the verses the attitude they need, while the melodic R&B touches bring warmth and make the song more inviting. He moves between the two styles in a way that gives the record personality. The flow carries the message with purpose, and the anthemic direction makes the hook feel like something you want to join in with. I love that combination of sharp lyrical expression and memorable melodies. It gives the track enough toughness to make its point while keeping it accessible and enjoyable.
Not to forget, the production is another part of the experience that deserves a little appreciation. It has that big, cinematic feel, with a hard-hitting rap foundation that gives the song its backbone. The African rhythmic influences add movement and character, while the melodic elements bring a welcome contrast to the harder edges. I particularly like the idea of bringing these different musical worlds together. You can hear the influence of YesaYa’s background in the overall direction, without the record losing its connection to contemporary UK rap. Everything works towards creating an uplifting, confident atmosphere that feels equally suited to a gym playlist, a long drive or one of those moments when you need a musical reminder of what you are capable of.
Released on 23 October 2026, “D.P.W.M. (Don’t Play With Me)” is a lovely introduction to an artist with plenty to say and a clear sense of who he is. What makes YesaYa interesting to me is the way he brings his Malawian heritage and London experiences together without choosing between them. He represents that feeling of belonging to more than one place, carrying your roots with you while building something new. I came away appreciating the confidence, the musical blend, and, most importantly, the message behind this record. It is bold, uplifting, and full of fighting spirit. YesaYa is making his voice heard, and if this release is anything to go by, he has a story worth sticking around for.
