For a moment, set aside the idea of polished perfection and imagine a band opening their windows so that punk, power pop, and folk rock can all blast into the room at the same time. That is the kind of thing Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends do, turning sharp ideas into bright, hooky songs with a mischievous grin. The song “Sing-Along Songs (Album Version)” was first released in 2024 and is now being issued in a new form, one that is nearer to the spirit of the original concept.
Although the title appears cheerful and the music indeed is, the song has a darker element concealed beneath its sunny exterior. By using ironic lyrics, the song gives a sly look at this odd and troubled period rather than delivering a lecture, which makes the idea of singing along both humorous and a bit disturbing. Rather than feigning that all is well, it avoids dealing directly with the chaos and still invites us to shout along. This contrast is what gives the song its charm, sharpness, and a surprisingly human touch.
The way the vocals are delivered is a major factor in creating that magic. The lead vocal carries the song with a clear sense of attitude and never comes across as too serious, even though the words have a sharp edge. David Myhr then provides wonderfully over-the-top background vocals in the second and third choruses, giving the performance a playful touch and producing hooks that become firmly embedded in the brain almost immediately. It’s the sort of harmonies you hear once and then find yourself singing while making coffee two days later.
This new version also allows the song more space to expand and gain momentum. The introduction is sharper and more punk-oriented, while the arrangement keeps the bounce and melodic charm of power pop, with a touch of folk-rock character to add depth. The guitars deliver the impact, the rhythm section keeps everything moving, and the backing vocals become an integral part of the instrumentation rather than just decoration. Most important of all, the mix is clearer and better balanced throughout, so that each musical hook reaches exactly the right place.
Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends come across as a project built on curiosity, catchy songwriting, and a healthy distrust of taking anything too seriously. “Sing-Along Songs (Album Version)” is a perfect calling card: funny without being empty, energetic without losing its melody, and punky without forgetting the joy of a great pop chorus. It is a little song for a messy world, delivered with a raised eyebrow, a loud guitar, and a very tempting invitation to sing along.
