Sometimes, an album becomes less a set of songs and more like a personal exploration of memory, darkness, hope, and discovery. Neighbourhood Tower’s debut album, Channeling Darkness (Discovering the Light), is an example. Released on April 17, 2026, this ten-song album invites us into a rich, atmospheric world where alternative pop and rock blend with shimmering synthesizers, dreamy soundscapes, and cinematic melodies.
The project is the work of Finnish artist and do-it-yourself producer Markku Ruottinen, a musician who has gradually developed his musical world since 2018. It began with a few electric-piano demos, then led to the 2019 EP Talking Wind, followed by Terror & Silence in 2021 and several singles. This impressive debut album now enables Ruottinen to fully realize his vision. Inspired by the Alan Parsons Project, E.L.O., The War on Drugs, Future Islands, and The Flaming Lips, he combines a vintage warmth with contemporary alternative styles. His music sounds familiar yet doesn’t seem confined to the past, and it is personal without sacrificing its cinematic scope. Let me take you on this beautiful journey.
“Stranger in a Strange Land” introduces the album as a slowly building film introduction does. The atmospheric style of the alt-rock song creates a feeling of uncertainty and quiet exploration, as though we have turned up in an unfamiliar place and are attempting to establish a sense of belonging. It thereby provides the emotional guide for what is to come.
The song “One Last Time” has a nostalgic feel and features the melody and the vocals as its focal points; the title suggests either a final encounter, a fading memory, or a wish to hold on for a bit longer; the way the vocals are delivered acts as the song’s emotional core and gives the melodic warmth a human quality.
When we get to “Distance,” the picture is expanded by cinematic, kaleidoscopic electronic textures, the atmosphere conveying a sense of separation which is physical and emotional, and the changing sonic colours give the impression of moving through memories that never quite settle. It serves as a natural showcase for the album’s synth-driven imagination.
“Parts of Me” is a song that looks in upon itself. The careful songwriting combined with subtle changes in sound gives it a reflective quality, mirroring the various versions of ourselves that come about as we move through life. Instead of making use of bold expressions, its strength is in the details and in the slow development of its musical ideas.
“Nothing Comes Easy” reaches the indistinct, immersive area characteristic of Beach House’s soundscapes. The dreamy nature of the song implies that feelings of longing, personal growth, and self-awareness seldom follow a direct course. The atmosphere encourages us to relax and float, allowing the music to transport its message not only through melody but also through texture.
“Channeling Darkness” is at the center of the album; the title embodies the album’s main tension, which is dealing with difficult emotions without letting them determine the entire narrative. The extended version provides space for this progression from dark to light to take place, so that the title track comes across as the emotional turning point at which the album’s questions start to find their answers.
Moving on, “Soul of a Radio” has an extensive and organic quality which aligns with the original vision for the album. The title suggests music as a signal travelling through the air, linking together strangers and arousing long-forgotten emotions. Because of its open musical nature, it provides a pleasant feeling of space within the album’s reflective atmosphere.
“Outer Skies” includes a dreamy instrumental section. Being mysterious and suggestive, it allows the music to express itself without the need for words and thus gives the album a broader, almost cosmic outlook. It has the feel of a pause between thoughts and a space in which the imagination can roam freely.
“Soft Bullets” presents a more sombre variant of alternative rock, with synth-driven spaciousness providing support. The title refers to the quiet injuries caused by apparently kind words, subtle disagreements, or emotional distance. The blend of rock textures and electronic atmosphere fits well within the album’s balance of tenderness and darkness.
“No Expectations” concludes the journey by reflecting on it with patience. Instead of forcing a dramatic ending, it lets the album’s emotional development settle naturally. The title implies a sort of freedom—that of accepting uncertainty, giving up the need to control things, and achieving peace by simply moving on.
The main advantage of the album is the sense of unity it has. Ruottinen is responsible for writing, performing, and producing all ten tracks, which gives the record a unique character. The synthesizers add colour and atmosphere, whereas the rock and pop elements ensure that the songs remain rooted in melody. The dreamy textures, the organic arrangements, and the spacious production contribute to the music having a cinematic quality without making it too refined or causing it to lose its human feel.
The vocal style is well suited to the overall atmosphere; instead of trying to grab our attention by force, the album’s vocal element is best appreciated for its melodic and emotional qualities, especially in “One Last Time.” The arrangements allow the songs room to breathe, and at the same time the instrumental sections offer their kind of expression. Subtle variations in texture and dynamics help to keep the listener interested from beginning to end. The fact that Ruottinen performed all the parts also contributes to the album having a consistent performance identity. Although the influences can be identified, they function as ingredients rather than as set instructions. The sound incorporates classic AOR melody, the openness typical of indie-rock, the movement associated with krautrock, and the hazy quality of shoegaze, thus creating a sound that is truly that of Neighbourhood Tower.
With “Channeling Darkness (Discovering the Light),” Neighbourhood Tower makes an assured entrance, offering music for late-night reflection, long journeys, and those moments when the mind wanders beyond the everyday. The album is atmospheric without becoming distant, nostalgic without surrendering to the past, and dark without abandoning hope. Markku Ruottinen has turned years of patient songwriting and home-studio exploration into a personal, carefully shaped, and rich-with-possibility debut. Neighbourhood Tower deserves a warm, wholehearted welcome. This is the beginning of a musical journey worth following, and Channeling Darkness (Discovering the Light) is a beautiful invitation to come along.
