Interview With MDL CHLD Regarding His Single “Numb”

Following the release of his track “All The Sudden” earlier this year, which is the second single from his new EP released in October, Toronto-based hip-hop musician MDL CHLD is back with another single named “Numb,” which he released on September 30th. “Numb” represents MDL CHLD’s love of music. It’s a song that calms the souls with its wonderful words, which are extremely moving and grip you from the initial verse. It features a pleasant beat and, obviously, MDL CHLD’s incredible vocals. We spoke with MDL CHLD from the other side of the globe to learn more about him and his work. Keep an eye out.

SONGWEB: Tell us about yourself and how your work as an artist influenced you.

MDL CHLD: I’m an intuitively guided individual that just goes with my flow – I think it’s important for all of us to follow our vision and whatever inspires/motivates us. Working as an artist I like to follow my gut – sometimes things don’t make sense to other people, but that doesn’t matter; I think we should all do more of this.

SONGWEB: What are the essential qualities that make you a good artist?

MDL CHLD: I’m hardworking and I trust my vision; I also love to include a variety of people, prioritizing my LGTBQ+ community, BIPOC individuals, and those whose stories deserve to be shared. We always strive to create inclusive and accessible content as well – people should be adding captions to their content (at the VERY least).

SONGWEB: How would you go about energizing a tired audience?

MDL CHLD: If I want to tune into my energetic gifts I could bring them through meditation or tarot reading on the collective energies – that always charges people up! Otherwise, just get on stage and start doing my thing – our shows are always captivating, especially because we include incredibly visually Deaf artists.

SONGWEB: Where do you get your inspiration and what trends influence your work?

MDL CHLD: I try not to follow trends but it’s important to understand the collective currents. Honestly, I just bounce my ideas around with the team and I’m surrounded by great people who help me brainstorm. We’re a creative bunch of witchy weirdos and it always works out.

SONGWEB: Could you tell us about your current project and its production process?

MDL CHLD: Currently, we’re working on an album lacing together sign language, magical visuals, & so much more. I can’t say too much but we have an incredible team of people coming together from all over the world to create something amazing; in 2023 it will be out.

SONGWEB: Could you describe the objective of your work?

MDL CHLD: To bring joy into people’s lives; I want them to understand that I am a multilayered individual and that it’s okay to express all parts of that self. Also, making accessible content is not as challenging as everyone claims it to be – just do it! Again, captions are simple and mean so much to many people.

SONGWEB: Describe how we can help you advance your career.

MDL CHLD: We just need to be in front of as many people as possible; once they get a glimpse of our work, whether it’s music, tarot, workshops, accessible content, or whatever, there is a natural curiosity & excitement to learn more about what we do, and in turn more about themselves.

SONGWEB: What have critics and collectors had to say about your work?

MDL CHLD: For our latest release, Numb, specifically, people have been so happy to see such a vulnerable side of me – so many people have told me about their struggles, personally or witnessing a friend/family member, with addiction, feeling lost, drinking, escapism, etc.. and I think it’s refreshing for them to see this other side of me. I think it will help many people, which is the main driving force.

“I wrote this song when I truly hit rock bottom,” says MDL CHLD. “This was the experience that cracked me open, shifted my life, and led me back to myself. I hope this song inspires anybody who is going through their own dark night of the soul to keep going; it really does get better.”

“Numb” is earworm-worthy, and it has an extraordinary capacity to connect with us emotionally. “Numb” is another lavish release in his burgeoning repertoire, and we are eager to hear others.
